Where Did The 'Ora Ora Get Pregnant' Meme Originate? The 'Yuri' Redraw Trend Explained
A comic by Japanese artist @kyouen2 about two girls jokingly hooking up at school but then learning that they are pregnant has come a redraw meme used to joke about LGBTQ+ ships in popular media.
The meme follows a longstanding internet tradition of shipping characters with each other, irrespective of whether the source material ever implies that they might end up together. The meme also ropes in elements of omegaverse lore, an edgy fanfiction trend that involves a lot of inconceivable (no pun intended) conception.
Here's how the "Ora Ora Get Pregnant" comic became a meme in late 2024.
Where Does The 'Ora Ora Get Pregnant' Comic Come From?
In late January 2024, Japanese webcomic artist and X user @kyouen2 uploaded a webcomic titled "悲しき過去," which translates to "Sad Past." The comic shows two female high schoolers smiling and jokingly hooking up in class, with the next panel showing them being told that they are pregnant by a doctor. The last panel shows a Yakuza-like character revealing that this was how he was born to a bartender.
But the comic did not go viral until a few months later, when Facebook page basedyuri posted an English translation of the meme:
How Did The 'Ora Ora Get Pregnant' Comic Become A Meme?
In mid-September 2024, the webcomic was given new life thanks to X user @himefujojo using it to reply to @soyjak0000's question about whether there is any Yuri manga where "women get other women pregnant." The comic proved to be the perfect way to jokingly answer @soyjak0000's query, gathering over 280,000 likes and 28,000 reposts in a week.
Redraws of the meme began making the rounds after this particularly viral repost; in late September, X user @bebekmokad uploaded a fan comic showing Honkai Star Rail characters Danheng and Caelus together, resulting in the birth of Zenless Zone Zero character Wise.
Later that month, X user @mydarlingchery posted a version of the webcomic with two female Genshin Impact characters, while X user @OmyChan2's Marceline and Princess Bubblegum redraw gathered over 178,000 likes in a day.
