Where Did The Nickname 'Obamna' Come From? Memes About Trump's Mispronounciation Of Obama's Name Explained
Donald Trump is still leading in Republican Primary polls despite his many legal troubles since his last presidency, no doubt due to his charismatic appeal amongst his own voter base. The businessman-turned-politician had a long list of snafus during his Presidency, but some of his missteps are agreed to be bipartisan comedic relief. Trump's coinage of the word Obamna remains one such instance that has turned into meme fodder over the years; here's how it happened.
Where Does The Word 'Obamna' Come From?
While there are sporadic instances of internet users humorously misspelling former President Barack Obama's name on the internet, it wasn't until Trump's fateful mistake during an October 2018 rally when the moniker grew famous. During the rally, which took place in Houston, Texas, Trump seemingly mispronounced Obama's name as "Obamna," perhaps mixing it up with the word "amnesty".
The clarity with which Trump delivered and indeed paused on the word "Obamna" was the cause of much hilarity for onlookers regardless of their political views.
When Was Trump's Delivery Of The Word 'Obamna' First Widely Recognized?
Trevor Noah's The Daily Show held a poll in early 2020 to decide which of Trump's various missayings and gaffs were the funniest, with "Obamna" being one of the shortlisted words in the "Best Trump Word" bracket.
How Is 'Obamna' Used In Memes?
The clip of Trump saying "Obamna" is often used in conjunction with another Presidential meme; one where Joe Biden appears to be saying Soda!
TikTok videos combining these two memes began making the rounds in November 2020, with one meme creator pushing forth the solemn statement, "No matter your beliefs, I found something we can all agree on" followed by a clip of Trump saying "Obamna" and Biden saying "soda."
