Where Did All the 'BBL Drake' Memes Come From?
Drake remains a rapper who has enjoyed widespread popularity over several decades for both his music and his personality, the latter of which has been mocked time and time again. Whether it's the "Drake the type of guy" corny accusations, his hilarious kawaii mirror selfie or his most recent homosexual coded banger with 21 Savage, every meme mocking Drake seems to slide off him without a nod of acknowledgment or derision from him.
But what started the femme-Drake meme train? Here's the lore behind BBL Drake, arguably the root of the newest wave of Drake memes.
Where Did BBL Memes Come From?
To understand the roots of the BBL Drake meme, one must study the "BBL Effect." The BBL Effect, where BBL stands for "Brazillian Butt Lift," is a long-running joke on TikTok about how someone changes their behavior after getting a butt-enhancement plastic surgery. Supposedly, one gets a BBL and starts behaving more posh, proper and feminine.
Where Did BBL Drake Memes Come From?
Sometime after these memes grew popular, Drake supposedly tore his ACL playing basketball with Stephen Curry. He posted an image to his Instagram story showing himself out of commission and pushed back the release of his album. Soon after, memes about Drake resting up after getting a BBL started making the rounds.
The appearance of a person who embodied the concept of BBL Drake did not help his cause, with videos of a Drake look-alike doing the Nicki Minaj "Bob" dance circulating soon after the initial BBL Drake tweets.
How Did BBL Drake Memes Spread?
Drake went on to be unabashedly sus in consecutive months, dropping a hilarious adorable "ahh" selfie in 2021 and a song where he croons at fellow rapper 21 Savage in 2022.
