What's The 'Red Larva' Meme? Red Larva Singing 'Oi Oi Oi' On TikTok Explained
The Red Larva meme, also known as "Oi Oi Oi," is sweeping TikTok at the moment.
It centers on the character Red from the children's animated series Larva which comes from South Korea. Zoomer and Gen Alpha kids who grew up on the show have spawned this nonsensical trend that rivals only Gegagedigedagedago in terms of brain rot.
However, who started the Red Larva Oi Oi Oi meme? Who's the culprit and what's the catchy song being used? Let's explain.
What's The TV Series 'Larva'?
Larva is a South Korean children's animated series that follows the adventures of two larva, Red and Yellow. It was released in 2011 and ran until 2022. Many American children watch the series on Netflix.
Where Did The 'Red Larva' Meme Come From?
Although viral memes featuring Red were posted in 2023, the "Oi Oi Oi" meme with Red didn't surface until this year and it's the reason why Red is now a meme.
The trend started with a series of videos that slowly fade in a meme, originally joking about typing "oi" instead of "ok." One of the videos, posted earlier this month, showed Red from Larva and it went viral, earning over 13 million views in a short amount of time.
From there, meme creators added to the trend by associating the "Oi Oi Oi" sound with the image of Red, mostly through a series of Misheard Song Lyric Speech Bubble memes that showed Red singing "Honi," "Oi" and other Japanese sounds from the song. Using Capcut templates and other recognizable formats, the meme has spread like crazy in only a few days.
What's The 'Red Larva Oi Oi Oi' Meme Song?
The song used in the Red Larva meme goes "Oi Oi Oi," which is said by the My Hero Academia character Katsuki Bakugo. The song is appropriately titled "OI OI OI Bakugou" by La Memerano. It's been viral before on TikTok, most notably back in 2020 when it was released online.
