Anime lovers are spreading a new meme around TikTok and it's got many users searching for context. The meme features the character Osaka from the anime Azumanga Daioh yelling "sata andagi" and it's got a much longer history online than you might realize. Here's what you need to know.

What Is The 'Sata Andagi!' Meme And Where Does It Come From?

The clip of Osaka saying "sata andagi" in a high-pitched voice comes from episode 21 of the anime series Azumanga Daioh, which was released back in 2002. During the episode, Osaka is seen eating sata andagi, a type of fried dough similar to a doughnut popular in Japan. Osaka keeps on repeating the phrase, to the point where it annoys another character, Tomo Takino.

The scene first became the subject of memes in 2006. The earliest known example is an edit posted to YouTube remixing the clip with the "You Are a Pirate" meme. From there, the scene became the subject of further edits and memes, including a Sparta remix.

How Is 'Sata Andagi!' Used In Memes?

The "sata andagi" meme continued to prove popular throughout 2023, including through a popular meme posted to /r/okbuddybaka in February and a viral DJ Khaled meme posted to YouTube in August. It saw a very significant boost on TikTok recently, though, following the release of the amateur rap song "fwyb" by Juanono! which features an audio clip of Osaka saying the line.

Since then, the original sound for the song has become increasingly popular on the site as users post memes featuring Osaka under the sound. Many of the memes are absurdist and ironic, featuring Osaka in bizarre and funny situations.
