What Is The 'I'm Looking For A Man In Finance' Song Literally Being Composed On TikTok? The Song And Its Meme-like Spread Explained
If you've been on TikTok in the past few weeks, chances are the phrase "I'm looking for a man in finance" is ringing in your brain.
A recent video where it seemed a user came up with a very House-ready hook has taken over the app, with users from around the world coming up with memes and, in some cases, full-blown songs based on what appears to be an intrusive thought. Here's what's going on with "I'm Looking For A Man In Finance."
What Is "I'm Looking For a Man In Finance"?
On May 1st, user @girl_on_couch posted a video where she enunciated in a valley girl voice, "I'm looking for a man in finance. Trust fund. 6'5", blue eyes."
In the video, she joked, "Did I just write the song of the summer?", but she actually might have. The affect with which she delivers the lyric sounds like it would slot alongside talk-speaky house tracks like Madonna's "Vogue," Ariana Grande's "Yes, And?" and Solar's "Colors."
Sure enough, people were inspired to build on the foundation @girl_on_couch laid, and the remixes, some of which are full-on songs, began appearing on the app.
Parodies soon followed, and brand accounts such as Celestial Seasonings got in on the action.
Did @girl_on_couch Get Paid For It?
On May 16th, @girl_on_couch released an official version of the song on streaming platforms, promoting it via her TikTok, so one can assume she's making some streaming money from that track. But, like many musicians today, the real money is elsewhere. She seems to be monetizing her fame with a series of self-aware ads for clients such as Tubi and her fans seem fine with it.
Other Phenomena Like "Looking For A Man In Finance"
This is hardly the first time TikTok or social media has taken a musical idea and expanded upon it in numerous ways. Some of the coolest phenomena from TikTok are "song crafted by website" tracks. Previous examples include Nathan J. Evans' Wellerman, Bryan Jordan Alvarez's 'Sitting Song' and myriad Midwest Emo Intro Parodies.
Such phenomena have been heartwarming for people who fret about the state of music, particularly with the wave of AI songs that are growing popular on the app. The act of completely organic group creation through talent and original ideas stands in stark contrast to typing, say, "Drake Song About Skibidi Ohio" into a generator.
