An illustrated guide teaching you the ins and outs of correctly handling miniature chibi versions of your favorite characters has become a viral redraw trend. But where did this drawing template begin, and how did it turn into a meme?

Hot on the tails of Moushley, another lovable miniature drawing trend, here's the history of the How To Handle X Meme.

Who Made The Original 'How To Pick Up X' Guide?

In early April 2023, Twitter user @wobbuuu posted a diagram explaining the optimal and appropriate way to pick up a chibi version of a character from the Hatsune Miku universe; a human character named Aoyagi Toya.

How Did The Drawing Become A Meme?

The image proved to be really popular and went on to inspire various other artists to make their own fan art. Early redraws of the trend included a character from the popular mobile game Genshin Impact, and a VTuber, which is basically a YouTuber that uses anime art instead of their own face.

As more people began to adopt the trend, they also began to subvert it. Some versions of the redraw stray from the original format, as in the case of a meme featuring Pochita from Chainsaw Man. Other memes make it so that brain damage is no issue in terms of handling.

Such memes are part of a larger social media trend popular amongst artists and animators. When a drawing template like this meme goes viral, it oftentimes inspires other artists to use it to draw their favorite or custom characters in similar situations. Some examples of popular redraw trends include He Wants To Order and Everyone Is So Mean To Me 💔.
