What Is 'Dogwater?'
Are you getting called "dogwater" by 12-year-olds in a voice chat playing your favorite game? Seeing elaborate copypastas festered with the word on Twitch and want to know what exactly does it mean? Here's our explanation for the slang term and popular gaming insult.
Where Does "Dogwater" Come From?
The insult "dogwater" or "dog water," similar in meaning to popular insults such as "dogsh*t" and "trash," originated in the Fortnite community in late 2020, but didn't quite become widespread until December that year. The word owes a large share of its popularity to Fortnite content creator Zachology, who on December 18th that year, acting as parody character Piece Control Kyle, posted a TikTok in which he trash talked an opponent in an elaborate fashion, using the insult "dogwater" among others.
Where are you going, you're lost, Dollar Tree headset, so free, freer than a public restroom, you're literally dogwater, zero PR, earnings check? Oh, we have none.
The expression quickly caught up with other Fortnite creators using the Piece Control Kyle character.
Now, why "dogwater" of all possible insults? One popular explanation is that the term would not get a streamer or YouTuber flagged like "dogsh*t" would for example, and that's why this euphemism got so popularized.
Through 2021, the word spread all over the gaming scene. For example, by March 2021 Dream SMP members and Ludwig were actively actively using it.
"Dogwater" Usage In Memes
Besides being used as gaming slang and as something to comment in your neighborhood Twitch chat, "dogwater" also spawned a few memes. First of all, TikTokers have been using "dogwater" clips by Zachology as sound effect, with one of the them being used in over 42,000 videos already.
Also, Zachology's "dogwater" insults have been actively used as copypastas, primarily on Twitch and YouTube.
