What Is 'Discord Packing?' The Slang Term Explained
Discord packing has recently seeped into TikTok and YouTube, leaving the safety of Discord and its kittens. So-called "packing" servers are filled with so-called "packers" who relay rapid-fire roasts and freestyles at the expense of others.
You've probably seen Packgod or King Thizz "pack" someone amid a Discord talent show. They're all over Twitch right now, tearing apart some of your favorite streamers when they enter the chat.
Even though you might have seen Discord packing, you might be unsure of what it means and where it came from. Let's explain.
What Does 'Discord Packing' Mean?
First and foremost, Discord packing is an art form. It requires someone with a vast vocabulary and a lot of breath, mainly because they're going to be using all of it. The word "packing" means to "pack" someone with fast-paced insults in the style of freestyle roasting. Most of the insults are nonsensical and nonspecific, usually being random phrases made to sound like hard-hitting insults.
Discord comes into play because it's the platform where most people get "packed." There are servers dedicated to Discord packing where opponents enter a group voice call as they would walk onto a "rap battle" stage.
The best thing about "packing battles" being held over a virtual voice call is that packers can then use sound effects, voice filters and music to make their freestyling sound dynamic and funny.
Where Did 'Discord Packing' Come From?
Discord packing and packing servers surfaced online in 2018 but didn't become notable forces until 2020. The first known Discord packing YouTube video was uploaded on July 30th, 2018. At the time, the first known packing server was called "Barbie PackHouse."
One server called "void" made waves in 2020 as it rose from the small group of packing servers that existed at the time. Its lead admins Packgod and Leg started the void YouTube channel and generated traffic back to their Discord server by posting viral diss tracks.
In 2022, Discord packing is a well-known concept due to screen recordings and reposts that surface on all video platforms. Big names in modern memes are also giving packers a platform. For instance, iShowSpeed got packed on a recent stream as well as the infamous EDP445.

I still have no idea what this means. As in metaphorically putting the insults inside of them like one would items into a suitcase? Is that right?

More like packing all of the voice call's available sound so that the other person can't chime in to deflect.
