The assassination of Charlie Kirk is the biggest topic on social media right now, and some people are blaming Etsy witches and Jezebel for supposedly having a role in the tragedy.

Memes about Etsy witches and their purported ties to Kirk's death have been going viral all over social media recently, and it's all thanks to one article posted only days before the incident.

So, what is an Etsy witch exactly, and why are people linking them to Charlie Kirk's death? Here's what you need to know.

What Is An Etsy Witch?

An Etsy witch is someone who identifies as a witch (typically practicing the modern Wiccan religion) and sells their services on the online DIY storefront, Etsy. These services include spells, such as love spells, money spells and good luck spells. On the other hand, Etsy witches also sell curses that can be cast on anyone that the purchaser wishes.

While Etsy tried to ban the selling of magic on the site in 2015, this didn't seem to have worked out too well, as witches are still very present on the site.

The idea of Etsy witches has inspired memes throughout the 2010s and 2020s. Most of these memes are lighthearted and fun, with the posters seeming to realize that they likely don't work. Others, however, fully believe in the witches' abilities.

How Are 'Etsy Witches' Used In Memes About Charlie Kirk?

Two days before conservative political influencer Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University in mid-September 2025, Jezebel published an article titled, "We Paid Some Etsy Witches to Curse Charlie Kirk." The article, which has now been updated with a disclaimer disavowing the shooting, details the writer's purchasing of curses against Kirk.

Apparently, none of these curses wished death on Kirk, but the timing is uncanny, and people have taken notice amid the aftermath.

After the news of Kirk's shooting and death went viral, people began quote-retweeting Jezebel's post, sharing the article with memes about the witches.

Many of these memes joke that the curses worked, suggesting Jezebel used some really good witches. Some are requesting the identities of the witches, while others are simply shocked by the timing of the article's release.
