A new internet slang term is sweeping TikTok that's comprised of three simple letters: HGS.

The term has surfaced en masse shortly after the widely viral YNS slang term populated TikTok last month. Usage of both started within the app's Black community, making them both AAVE slang terms that have gone viral in the digital realm.

So, what does HGS mean? Where did it come from and why is it viral now? Let's explain.

What Does 'HGS' Mean On TikTok?

"HGS," which is more accurately written "HGs" and most commonly spelled in all lowercase like "hgs," is a slang abbreviation that means "home girls." Of course, "home girls" means a group of female friends.

Also, the variation "HG" also floats around from time to time. This, of course, means a singular "home girl."

Where Did 'HGS' Come From?

A definition for "HG" was first added to the Urban Dictionary way back in 2004. However, "HGS" was added almost two decades later, in early 2020.

Currently, the first known viral usage of "HGs" on social media was a tweet sent by Twitter / X user @sw33tky in January 2020. It was a quote tweet of a since-deleted video. Regardless, it's a signal of the slang term's early usage.

Why Is 'HGS' Viral On TikTok?

Over time, usage of HGs became increasingly viral online, especially after it gained viral usage on TikTok this year. People type HGs instead of "home girls" to have less text in their meme's caption. It's quite simple.

For some reason, usage of HGs has gone widely viral in the Henry Danger memes which went viral on the app this month. There's something about Henry Danger's expressions and antics that just screams shenanigans with the HGs.
