Have you seen the slang term "Hemmy" being used on TikTok lately and wondered what it means? You're not alone, because many people have not seen the 2016 Comedy Central cartoon Legends of Chamberlain Heights, where it comes from, until this week.

The show's token white character, Milk, is the one who says, "Hemmy," like when he said, "Where you going, hemmy?" in one scene that inspired memes online recently. Some people don't even know how to spell the term, and neither do we. Conflicting transcriptions include "hemmie" and "hemmi."

However, "hemmy" has become the widely accepted use, and now the word is stuck in everyone's heads. So, what does it mean? Where did "Hemmy" come from and why is it so popular right now? Let's explain.

What Does 'Hemmy' Mean?

"Hemmy," also spelled "hemmie" or "hemmi," is a slang term that's just a different way to say "homie" or "homey," as in a close friend in AAVE.

The term comes from the cancelled Comedy Central animated series Legends of Chamberlain Heights, specifically from the character Milton, also known as Milk. He says, "homey" like "hemmy" because of his "step-Jew accent," according to the leading definition for the term on Urban Dictionary.

What Is 'Legends Of Chamberlain Heights?'

Legends of Chamberlain Heights was an animated series on Comedy Central that lasted for two seasons from 2016 to 2017. It centers on three high school freshmen, Jamal, Milk and Grover, who are benchwarmers for their school's basketball team, according to the synopsis on IMDb.

The show received mixed reviews at the time of its release. "Is Legends of Chamberlain Heights the best Comedy Central can come up with?" wrote one dissatisfied Redditor on /r/television in 2016.

Another one, around the same time, wrote, "Did anyone actually kinda like Legends of Chamberlain Heights?" One commenter replied, "This show isn't good. It's great," on the /r/television post.

Currently, it holds ratings of 40% and 54% on the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes.

Where Did 'Hemmy' Come From?

The first utterance of "hemmy" on Legends of Chamberlain Heights comes from the show's first episode, titled "Jamallies," which aired on September 14th, 2016. The episode's transcript on the site Springfield! Springfield! writes the line as, "Whoa, pump them breaks, homey," but Milk for sure says, "Hemmy," in the fifth minute's scene.

The reason "Hemmy" has become notable so many years later is because Legends of Chamberlain Heights has earned a new, dedicated fandom, all because of TikTok clippers who began spamming scenes from the show this year.

The clips attracted new eyes and changed the show's critical reception. Many seem to think positively about the show now, as seen in viral videos of people praising it, like one from TikToker @peetyupnext, who called it "peak comedy" this week.

"Hemmy," specifically, went viral when a TikToker named @..ary9k posted a video at the end of November 2025, which followed the "Big Forehead Homers Guide" or "Domer Guide" format. The video shows four images of Milk, paired with the audio of him saying, "Hemmy."

Each image is a different color, but all pass the imaginary checkmark test that the format follows. The fourth and last "Hemmy," though, fails, and it's shown with a warning symbol, sounding the alarm.

What Is The 'Where You Going Hemmy' Meme?

On the following day, a TikToker named @marsmix__ shared a clip from season 1 that furthered the use of "Hemmy." In the scene, Milk is seen onboard an "Air Persian" flight and he stops a fellow passenger from exiting the row, saying, "Where you going, hemmy?"

Milk's catchphrase significantly added to the use of "Hemmy" in memes, as several video edits and other variations of the phrase surfaced online.
