A video of an adoring crowd squealing at a video of a singing animated boy has been going viral on social media, with commentators finding the crowd's excitement for a virtual performance increasingly hilarious.

But rumors of the concert costing $300 to attend have raised further eyebrows, given that the "performance" was essentially a prerecorded animated video projected onto a wall. Here is a rundown of what VTubers are, where the original concert really came from, and how much it really cost to attend.

What Is The 'VTuber Concert' Video Being Shared On The Internet?

In early July 2023, several Thai TikTokers shared videos of them at a VTuber performance. The video showed attendees in a small room, with a video of an anime-looking boy projected onto a wall. The animated boy can be heard delivering an impressive rendition of Japanese artist Fuji-Kaze's song Shinunoga E-Wa, but his singing prowess isn't what led to the video being reposted across the internet.

As the animated boy's performance continues, he removed the bangs covering his eyes, leading to adoring screams from his audience. The jittery, basic animation of the performance, paired with the notion that people could be so ga-ga over an animated character, led various commentators to ridicule the concert.

What Did People Say About The VTuber Concert?

Initial reactions to the video commented on the quality of the performance, given that other virtual influencers like Hatsune Miku have set a high standard for what is expected from a virtual performer. Other people reacted to the performer's excited audience and at the absurdity of squealing at an animated video.

Various TikTokers poked fun at the concert's simplistic animation by mimicking the performer's jittery and robotic motions.

Did The VTuber Concert Really Cost $300 To Attend?

Somewhere between people joking about the VTuber's animation and the audience's reaction, a rumor about the concert costing $300 to attend began to spread. Several TikTokers made videos mimicking the VTuber's motions with variations of the caption, "POV: You just wasted $300." But the idea that this performance cost $300 to attend is objectively false.

The VTuber performing in the video is named Dacapo, and he is the most-subscribed member of the Thai Virtual Talent Agency "Algorhythm Project." The video of him performing a song was recorded at Bangkok's Cosplay and Arts Festival, where he and several other VTubers were performing for free. The Festival itself cost 300 Thai Baht to attend, which is equal to about $9 in American currency.
