Today, we regret to inform you that a beloved mascot known to so many has passed away at the age of 104 after a tragic car accident. Announced in a tweet seen around the world, the official Twitter account of Mr. Peanut, now rebranded as 'The Estate of Mr. Peanut' confirmed the news that he had died sacrificing himself to save his friends.

As soon as the news was shared, many American brands couldn't help but respond with sympathies and fond memories of the Planters mascot on their own accounts. In addition, the hashtags #RIPeanut and #MrPeanut trended for the entire day. Despite his death serving as a big marketing ploy for the 2020 Super Bowl, many users couldn't help but share their feelings about his sudden departure and whether or not it was all just a conspiracy.

His death is shown in a promotional commercial for the Super Bowl.

Mr. Clean felt a lot of feelings.

TIVO shared their favorite photo of him.

He was the correct answer for this Jeopardy! tweet.

Oreo Cookies performed a dunking salute on his behalf.

The Kool Aid Guy had a tough time with the tone of his tweet.

Of course many couldn't help but joke about all of the people inflicted by peanut allergies.

To them, today was a big day.

A day of celebration, if you will.

Some were happy to see the mascot perish in a terrible accident.

While others took a guess as to which corporate icon was next.

Of course there were several conspiracy theories floating around.

We're still waiting for the government to respond.

Some users wondered if advertising had jumped the shark completely.

Unless of course…he is still alive?

Rest in power, Mr. Peanut.

Not in cruelty, not in wrath
The Reaper came today
An angel visited this gray path
And took the nut away.

On a more related news, Monty Python co-founder Terry Jones also died that same day.

And yet people are paying their respects to a fucking advertising mascot rather than a well known comedian. We truly are living in a dark timeline.

I somehow misread that as "died that same way."

Admittedly, that'd have been better than dementia.
