History memes are always popular, and for a good reason. Though we had to sit through well over a decade of schooling, at least our history lessons finally paid off. We might not normally care about the Mongol invasions, but to the world of memes, our nearly forgotten history facts have a whole new purpose far better than filling textbooks.

History memes give us a reason to brush up on our history knowledge, because joking about the mistakes of people in the past somehow makes us feel better about the reality of the present crashing down around us. The world isn't doing too great lately, but then again, it's never been too awesome, as history has proven. At least we can joke about the bad things, though, as well as the many very strange trivia facts that have been dug up by historians everywhere to reference in memes. Here are 23 of the our favorite history memes from this week.
