15 Ancient Memes To Remind You How Unfunny The Internet Used To Be
It's no secret that memes have significantly changed over the past two decades. Memes now tend to be more surreal and nonsensical than they were in their infancy, when rage comics and advice animals dominated online humor. But lest we begin to look back fondly on those ragtag years, the Twitter account @OldMemeArchive has been compiling some of the worst examples of 2007-2012 internet comedy to remind us all that humor back then was just abysmal.
As evidenced by the account's posts, so much online humor of those years was 9GAG cringe, intense Justin Bieber hate, and general unhinged idiocy. It was a simpler time, but not necessarily a better time, and it's not just the staleness of these memes that makes them so bad. While some of the account's ancient posts could work in a modern setting as ultra-ironic memes, the majority are unsalvageably terrible. Take a stroll down memory lane and remember just how bad memes were back then.

At least there was a genuine attempt at humor with old memes, not nowadays where the most prevalent memes are low tier relatable crap, social media trends, and fuck ton of socio/political passive aggressive ones (x=bad, y=good).

At least memes back then were funnier than memes now. I don't care how much 4chan spams them and bullies people with them, wojacks will never be funny.

2012: "Come at me Bro! We can on anything! YEAHHHHH!!!"
2021: "We were so young, naive and innocent… If we only knew…."

Are we really all that funnier now? Will people look at today's memes and still find them funny ten years from now, if they can even understand them? Who knows.
