It is one of the best jobs for a young person with no degree and little experience. It offers a chance to learn important soft and hard skills, practice discipline and get fit, gain access to vet-only services like Navy Federal and USAA, and get that sweet GI Bill college bonus.
I have seen it HUGELY SQUANDERED quite a lot by a bunch of flunky infantrymen and a tour of duty will change ya but the military does offer a lot of great perks to get you started in life in addition to your basic needs.
