We’re used to seeing the world's flags as these gallant (perhaps star-spangled) banners waving in the wind. Carried at the front of an advancing army, hoisted to the top of a tall ship’s mast, saluted at a baseball game. But flags are just rectangles with colors or animals on them at the end of the day (well, most of them are rectangles. A few of them are triangles or squares, but that’s kind of in the weeds now, isn’t it?).

There’s something funny about so much meaning adhering to a symbol that in some sense is quite arbitrary, and the flag nerds at Reddit's /r/vexillologycirclejerk understand this. The subreddit began as a way to post memes and make fun of other posters who are really into flags, but it’s evolved into something much bigger than that.
